Recreating everyday life of Highland society from 1314 to 1746

We exemplify the common Highlander’s life during the period of Scottish independence. From garb to food to weaponry, we provide a unique educational experience based on historical accuracy. Historic Highlanders is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1989, a mere 243 years after the period we present! Our members hail from throughout New England and come together at those most Scottish occassions: the Highland Games. Our encampment features Scotland’s military traditions as exemplified in their arms; cooking of period-appropriate foods over a fire; herbal medicine and folklore healing; the long task of turning wool into a plaid; and woodworking in an era before power tools. On some special occasions we may be accompanied by wolfhounds or demonstrate the power of a Highlander against a pumpkin!

”I am an artist blacksmith / toolmaker / blade-smith. The range of my work includes: historical interpreting while demonstrating; outdoor / garden sculptures; functional hardware; swords; authentic colonial reproductions for homes such as, door hinges and door handles; and architectural iron work such as, benches and railings. I work in other metals such as: aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, titanium and meteorite.”

Northampton’s local Historical European Martial Arts group. We practice forms including stick, two-handed sword, and rapier, many of which have a Scottish connection.
